I really like video games. And it's not only because I love spending hours grinding in a great RPG, but because there are so many different ways to enjoy them. So, barring the act of simply playing it, what other ways can you delve into the adventure of a good game?
Well writing is a really good example. I love writing about games, as do many other gamers and journalists. For me, it's something that I do to make sure I don't end up talking my friends' ears off day and night. There's so much I could say about whatever game i play or piece of news I read. Sometimes I like talking about a game more then actually playing it. Writing though, is a lot more powerful, because it forces you to think a bit more deeply about what you're actually writing. You experience the game over again, in a way.
Watching others playing your favourite game is another treat. The Let's Play community on YouTube is huge right now, and only getting bigger. I myself am not a funny person. There's no doubt about that. But watching an actually funny person playing a game is awesome. Sometimes you don't even need the extra commentary. Sometimes it's relaxing to just sit back and watch someone else plow through a game. Especially with how cinematic video games are nowadays.
Fan art is really fun too. No I'm not talking about my shitty 5th grade Sly Cooper fan art, but those excellently drawn ones that are just gorgeous. I love drawing and fan art is something I do here and there. Thing is, I don't particularly like fan art. In fact I reeeeeally dislike fan art. But I like drawing it. Sounds stupid but hear me out; I like drawing fan art cause I think games are an exceptional outlet for creativity. The goal in art for me is to illustrate something in my head that I want to share with others. Games are something that provide tons of inspiration for me and many others. I'll play a game and maybe an event inside that game will suddenly give me a feeling or an image in my head that I want to draw. It's an effect that happens a lot with games in the Legend of Zelda series and Dynasty Warriors. I love those bouts of creativity spurred by those games.
These are just my thoughts on the matter. Writing this reminds me of the whole 'games as art' debate, so I might write up my thoughts on the topic sometime. Or not. YOU CAN'T MAKE ME.
